RIVER HERRING STAKEHOLDER WORKSHOP

OVERVIEW

This one-day workshop will assemble a diverse group of stakeholders from the New England region:

  • To explore future directions for river herring conservation and management, and
  • To foster new collaborations between stakeholders.

Participants include managers, academics, industry representatives, scientists, engineers, harvesters, and interested public, sharing their views through discussion in facilitated break-out groups. A major outcome of the workshop will be important actionable recommendations for the development of future river herring conservation and management strategies by local communities and State and Federal government.

The workshop is part of a National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) project, Designing a River Herring Catch Share for the East Coast. Recognizing that catch share approaches are one of many tools, we encourage workshop participants to think broadly about future strategies for river herring conservation and management.

The workshop has been made possible by the NFWF, University of New Hampshire, Northeast Consortium, UNH Department of Natural Resources, Training in Integration of Decision-making and Ecosystem Science (TIDES) Graduate ProgramThe Nature Conservancy, Pew Environment Group, New England Fishery Management Council, New Hampshire Fish and Game, and Photography by Michelson, Inc.

OBJECTIVES

  • To gather stakeholders' views on the most important problems affecting river herring, and on future strategies for conservation and management.
  • To bring a diverse group of stakeholders together in a space that fosters collaboration and promotes trust.

OUTCOMES

Outcomes from the workshop will include a summary of findings, which will be made available to the public, provided to management agencies, and inform our project by recommending how to improve river herring management coast-wide.  This summary report will include aggregated results from the pre-workshop survey, and results of workout group discussions, with short- and long-term actionable items.
